International Cooperation Project: Project for Implementation of Environmental Awareness Programmes among local schools through Establishment of Green Youth Model in Dangolla, Kandy, Sri Lanka (JICA Partnership Program(JPP))

【国際協力事業】公立学校を拠点としたゴミ問題解決のためのグリーンユース・コミュニティ形成事業 (JICA草の根協力支援型)

summary

This project began with a desire to provide continuous international cooperation following a study visit programme conducted in 2016 and 2017 by Professor Yoshiyuki Nagata’s laboratory in the Department of Education, University of the Sacred Heart, Tokyo. As a result, the project was selected for the JICA Partnership Program(JPP)in 2018. After the COVID-19 and the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, we concluded an agreement on international cooperation with the University of Peradeniya (Sri Lanka) and have been implementing an educational project for two years since February 2023.

In this project, we implemented joyful learning at a public primary school in a small village with the support of Keiko Okawa Laboratory, Keio University Graduate School of Media Design (KMD), as well as our undergraduate and graduate students. The initiative focused on solving the garbage problem, which is one of the common social issues in Sri Lanka. Through the whole school approach to sustainability and the multi-stakeholder approach in which not only the school but also local families, universities, companies, and local government support the children, many smiles were brought to the them who had gone through a difficult time due to the COVID-19 and the economic crisis. The following booklet provides an overview of the results of the project. Please see the following booklet.
